LAUSDnet for Kids

P.S. Arts / Crossroads Foundation

  • P.S. Arts provides Beethoven students with special performing and visual arts classes. All students enjoy music and art classes. In addition, teachers use the Orff method to both capture student interest and teach musical theory and appreciation. Our instrument group has performed for audiences with rave reviews.

Field Trips

  • Beethoven is very fortunate. Our students participate in a variety of field trips that support our core curriculum. Some places they will visit include 826LA for writing and making books; the Los Angeles County Fair; for vocabulary that relates to our reading program as well as to learn about animal life; Ocean View Farms, a community garden; Downtown Central Library, which is an historic landmark; and others. The trips will enrich our students’ vocabulary and writing skills. Many of our trips are sponsored by our parent support group, Friends of Beethoven

Wonder of Reading Library

  • This non-profit organization works with public schools to bring three "R's" to selected schools; renovate, restock (children's books), and read. Our new library opened on November 2, 2002. Volunteers read with the students one hour weekly. The library is staffed daily by our library aide and volunteers. About $35,000 have been dedicated to support our instructional program. A neighborhood beautification program grant from the city of Los Angeles has made possible the creation of a clay mosaic by the main entrance in front of the new library and a lovely outdoor reading area.

Intervention Program

  • Intervention for selected students is available after school. Classes typically last one hour and are taught by our experienced certified staff. Continuation of this program is dependant on students needs and funding.

Core instructional Programs

  • Language Arts

    • Open Court Reading is the program used in grades K - 5. It is a phonics based program which incorporates spelling, writing, and quality literature.

  • Math

    • Math instruction is based on the California Content Standards in Mathematics. Math concepts are taught using a variety of materials. The standards-based instruction incorporates manipulatives, intervention materials, technology, and provides a concrete approach to meet the needs of our diverse population.

  • Science

    • The new elementary science program for K-5 students is called Full Option Science System (FOSS). During the school year, each teacher will teach a physical, life, and earth science module, using FOSS inquiry-based instructional materials.

  • Social Studies

  • Physical Education

  • Special Education

Homework Lab

  • Students will have a quiet place to complete their homework under the supervision of an adult. The Homework Lab is now open Mondays through Thursdays. Thanks to the Venice Marina Rotary Club, we are able to provide the Homework Lab. More information can be found by clicking on the English and Spanish PDFs.
